Show Highlights

The Amherst Railway Society 2012 Railroad Hobby Show added an air of anticipation and live theater to the event this year. Leading up to the show, Athearn announced it would unveil its latest product at the show. As word spread around the buildings, a crowd flocked over to the company’s booth in the Better Living Center. At announcement time, the crowds lined the booth several people deep with everyone ready to film and photograph the big moment. As the anticipation reached its zenith, the company announced a re-tooled GP38-2 in a variety of paint schemes and styles. This was something different for the show and a bit of excitement.

Along with the Athearn announcement, another live event was added to the show. This year, the band The Electric Trains performed their railroad themed songs inside the Better Living Center both days. The group drew big crowds – probably one of the few places such a niche group’s work can be appreciated. Based out of Connecticut, the group’s songs included many lyrics about long forgotten rail lines in the state – like the song “Airline” about the former inland route between Boston and New York which was abandoned many years ago.

Over in the Young Building, the Mohegan Pequot Model Railroad Club added a new two rail O scale division. A 12’x16’ single track modular layout was setup between their HO and G scale modular railroads. The ten section layout wasn’t quite complete but did feature a completed scratchbuilt stone arch bridge, small yard, and a golf course scene.

The 2013 Railroad Hobby Show will be held on January 26 and 27, 2013.
